German production duo and siblings Duderstadt have been on the radar for quite some time now having turned out some great remixes across both ‘Beats and ‘Deep that have showcased their warm and distinctive sound to great effect. Super8 & Tab "Empire": track-by-track interview

Featuring collaborations with Jan Burton, Betsie Larkin, Julie Thompson and Alyna, 'Empire' is the debut artist album from Finnish trance pioneers Super8 & Tab. Ahead of its eagerly anticipated release on 13th September, we caught up with Super8 & Tab for a track-by-track interview to get a deeper insight into the album and its production process. 1. Slow To Learn feat. Jan Burton

"That's a track with Jan Burton. He came around to make a track called ‘Empire’. Then we played around to make a couple of other tracks, he really like this one so we started to work it. He made the vocals in one day.” Tab
"The verses are really held back and then it explodes in the chorus. The hypnotic bassline creates a really good atmosphere for the beginning of the album; there's a sense of build and anticipation to the track, but we really tried to trap people's attention from the start." Super8

2. Empire feat. Jan Burton

"We wrote the background for this track, but we didn't actually know what to do with it. Then we started thinking that some vocals would really bring the track to life. We were listening to the Gabriel & Dresden album and we really liked Jan Burton's voice on this track; we thought he could really give it what it needed. We just got in touch with him, we hadn't seen or spoke with him before that. Although we sent him the track first, we didn’t actually hear what he had done to the track until he came here to Finland." Tab

3. Black Is The New Yellow feat. Anton Sonin

“Anton Sonin has been working in the next studio to us here in Finland. He was working on a track, but was having a bit of trouble getting it right, so we put some of our influence with his thoughts and it all came together. If you see sound in colours then you can think the beginning of the track is black then the full-on part is yellow.” Super8

4. My Enemy feat. Julie Thompson

“This was actually the last track to be completed. It was the first we started and the last we finished. But it was good that we put the time into it."  Super8
“That track has been changed a lot, we went through so many versions, like 25 or something.  But that’s how we work, if we have something with good ideas we’d rather take the time to get it right than just have lots of half-finished tracks that never get to be finished products.” Tab

5. Perfect Day feat. Alyna

“The album gave us an opportunity to do different kinds of tracks and to just do music that we love. This is what we came up with. 'Perfect Day' got started at the same time we made a track called 'Delusion'. We were doing vocals with Alyna for 'Delusion' when we came up some melody ideas which didn't fit with 'Delusion' but had lots of potential. So we started to work on the whole new track which later came to be 'Perfect Day'. What is our perfect day? Winning 7 million euros in the lottery. Or more realistically, last August when I got married.” Super8

6. Eternal Sequence

“I think it’s important to do tracks that are a bit slower, to show that you can do different sounds.” Super8
"With ‘Eternal Sequence’ we were going for something different, something we haven’t tried before. And we think what we came out with is quite a unique sound. The whole album gave us an opportunity to make different kinds of sounds and tracks so this fits quite well with it.” Tab

7. Good Times feat. Betsie Larkin

“We did a remix for Ferry Corsten’s ‘Made Of Love’ and we really liked Betsie’s vocals. We sent her different backgrounds and she really liked this one, so it came out pretty good. This is actually the only track that we have a live instrument on, so it had more of a human touch.” Super8
“My brother is playing live bass, he's also in a rock band. Now he has started to make some electronic music. It gave our sound a new level." Tab

8. Mercy feat Jan Burton

“Jan lines to drink red wine. He cannot sing without red wine. You give him some red wine and he’ll sing perfectly for the next five hours. Until he is too drunk to continue. When we recorded those vocals for ‘Mercy’, we were really excited about the track but it took some time to get the music right” Super8
“We always knew the vocals were great, but the music was a lot harder. I think we played it for the first time at The Gallery about 6 months ago. When you play your demos early in clubs, you always listen really closely and almost forget to pay attention to the crowd. You’re just listening. But it’s always good to play your tracks out in clubs because you can get it right. It changed a couple of times.” Tab

9. Irufushi

“We bought a new synth, a Moog Voyager, around the time we wrote this and we got the bassline for 'Irufushi' from that. It gives off a really distinctive sound – we were going for something between the Swedish house sound and Anjunabeats.” Tab
“It’s good to check out all the new software stuff, but it’s also really good to get some hardware. Most producers are doing only software, so it’s much easier to sound personal using different synths and different outboard gear like pre-amps or EQs.” Super8

10. Bliss

“We are old guys [laughs] and on this we were putting our hands in the air and going back to the days of 1999 track – stuff like System F, Gouryella. Before that period I was more into house and psychedelic trance so we wanted to do one track that reached back to those days and our original inspirations. Some full-on euphoric trance." Super8

11. Free Love feat. Jan Burton

“This takes the end of the loop from ‘Slow To Learn’ so it’s like we start the whole process again. Also it’s good as it just brings things down a bit. When Jan came to Finland for the first time, we went out to eat and he asked us what type of music we wanted to do, we told me we wanted to do something more experimental. After that we came to the studio, we listened to ‘Empire’ and we said 'ok, lets start that tomorrow.' And then I started to play those chords from ‘Free Love’ and we just wrote the track from there and Jan started to write lyrics. It was really fast. Almost every track we have done with him has been really fast, our chords and his vocal melodies just seem to go well together.” Super8

SIX THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT... TONY

If you weren't a DJ what would you like to have been?
I used to work for a record company doing marketing and A&R and I really enjoyed it: I think if I wasn't doing this I’d probably still be in the music business. That being said I think there are a lot of things I could have happily done. I also worked in advertising, did some marketing and business consultancy and really enjoyed them all for different reasons.

Do you remember the first track you ever bought?
I do. It was "Never Smile at a Crocodile" from the Peter Pan Disney movie. It was a 5” red vinyl and I was about 4 or 5 years old at the time!
In terms of club tracks the first one I ever bought was ‘Bar None’ by Max Graham on Hope. After we finished our Ayumi Hamasaki remix for Avex records they offered us our first ever DJ gig in Tokyo in front of 8,000 people, so I had to buy some decks and records pronto! I went to Plastic Fantastic and bought about thirty records in that first trip, and on top of the pile was Max Graham ‘Bar None’.

What one thing do you always have with you when travelling?
My CD's! But apart from that it's gotta be my iPhone - you can do so much with it.

If you could have three people over for dinner dead or alive who would they be?
I think it would have to be John F Kennedy first. He avoided a nuclear war by diffusing the Cuban Missile crisis so we all owe him our lives in a way. I would also love to talk to him about Marylin Monroe and what actually happened! Next I think I'd like to have my Dad because he died a couple of years ago and it would be nice to see him again. And last but not least, Kiera Knightly as she holds a certain fascination for me.

What is your biggest achievement as a artist?
One of the things I love doing most is writing songs and lyrics. A couple of years ago our track ‘Satellite’ was selected to be part of the English language course for Spanish and Italian schools and so lyrics to 'Satellite' are now immortalised in their English course books!

Is there anything you'd like to achieve outside of the music world?
I'd really like to write a book, based on biology, about how organic life can be a much better model of how to organise businesses than the 'machine for making money' nonsense we all endure at the moment.

Maor Levi had been hallmarked for great things ever since his prog trancer ‘Lital’ gave us our first insight into the skills of this prodigiously talented producer back in 2005 and has been a key Anjuna producer ever since. Having had a short hiatus due to national service, he returns with ‘Chasing Love’. Enlisting the help of Ashley Tomberlin, another who is no stranger to Anjuna followers having previously lent her atmospheric vocals to heavyweight tracks such as Luminary’s ‘Amsterdam’ and Above & Beyond’s ‘Can’t Sleep’, perhaps it was inevitable that this inspired collaboration would be a smash.

The Original Mix, as featured on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 8, synthesises Maor’s trademark edgy sound with a gorgeous, airy vocal floating off the top of a magical, swirling spiral of melodies and purposeful bottom end.

The Club Mix then sees Maor rework the track for dancefloor destruction with a dense, heavy groove and more orthodox peak-time structure.

And to complete, Laurent Véronnez dons his Airwave hat for a beautifully brooding, darkly atmospheric breakbeat rework with echoes of classic Hybrid about it.

Offering you a deeper insight into Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 8, our ‘Behind The Music’ series will be taking you closer to the music as we ask our artists to open a window into their sounds. This week we speak to Tony McGuinness from Above & Beyond, Oliver Smith and Thomas Datt.

Above & Beyond feat. Richard Bedford "Thing Called Love"
""The chorus came from the chords on the original demo that Paavo did. The chords had a really strident pattern and the first words that came to mind were [sings] 'thing called love'. It was a long time before the song really got fleshed out.
"I think the thing that prompted it was when I was in Ibiza and I got a text from this girl that I was nearly seeing but never quite crossed the line of friendship. Anyway she sent me a text saying 'are you free on x date of September' and I figured she was getting married. I said 'i'd love to come if I'm in the country', some texts went back and forward, then I jokingly texted 'shall I bring my overnight bag, in case he says no'. And it went dead for about an hour. Then just as I'm sitting there, worrying a bit if I've said they wrong thing, I get a text back saying 'I waited 10 years for you'.
"I remember staring at the screen 'I just never knew' and it just reminded me of those times when you are too afraid to make the move and lose something that might have been. Basically, the verses are telling exactly the story of that relationship that never was with her - this chance that you have to take it to a different level or different place but don't for whatever reasons. Maybe it's mitigating circumstances, or timing, or who knows...
"So the song is really about a lost love rather than a realised one. 'You live your life just once'... that's really the key line for me, it's not a dress rehearsal. It's a sad love song, it's about an opportunity that I didn't take." - Tony McGuinness

Oliver Smith "Chordplay"
“I often start a track with the main chord progression and this one is no exception. As the title suggests, the chords were the result of some experimentation and playing around with different ideas and notes. Once I had found the chords I was looking for I then set about finding the right mood. I settled on a deep and atmospheric feel that I think would be the perfect soundtrack for a late night drive on an empty highway.
"I was also looking to experiment with different sounds and was inspired by a vintage analog synth called Studio Electronics SE1 that I recently bought. I used this to make some sounds that are hopefully both classic and futuristic at the same time. This timeless quality is something that I'm always striving for in my music. There are also many layers to the track but I was careful to make everything fit together so that there is complexity hidden within simplicity. It was a lot of fun making this one!”

Thomas Datt pres. Asedo "Seven Years"
"It has been seven years since my first release, which was a part of the Solid Globe 'North Pole' remix competition. I chose the name 'Seven Years' because I thought it was quite meaningful and had a nice ring to it. I also thought it would be a good joke since it always took me so long to write original tracks. Completing this single turned out to be a huge goal of mine, since I always wanted a release on Anjunabeats. My main inspiration came from my remix of John Askew's 'Beirut', which with the popularity it received, convinced me that something similar would be a great fit for the label. When working on the track, I didn't feel there was much direction apart from the groove. However everything came together through a string of happy accidents after many hours of messing around."- Thomas Datt

SIX THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT... JONO

If you weren’t a DJ what would you like to have been?
I probably would have done something else in music but removing that from the equation I probably would have done acting or something like that. I was quite into magic as a kid so definitely something in acting or performance.

Do you remember the first track you ever bought as a kid?
I can’t remember the first single but I remember the first album. It was Pet Shop Boys album ‘Please’. I remember following them and buying all their albums from then on. It was what kind of got me into synths and popular music. I think the production at the time was incredible and they had Trevor Horn produce Introspective. Musically I think they were amazing as well an inspiration.

What’s your usual pre event meal?
I try and avoid steak and burgers. I mostly like fish because it’s really light and you need to stay awake. I also have an espresso coffee.

What is your favourite instrument and why?
The piano. It’s very dynamic and flexible. I also like the guitar but with the piano you can see all of the notes and you don’t need to do anything to hear the note like a trumpet where you have to blow it. So the piano definitely.

If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive who would they be?
Derren Brown and I would definitely get Trevor Horn round so I can find out all his production secrets. My wife because I’d like to see more of her but I’m always on tour DJing.

Who has been your biggest influence in music outside of trance?
I don’t really think it’s a genre thing. I’d like to say it is more 80’s music in general. A lot of bands in the 80’s like Dépêche Mode, New Order, and Pet Shop Boys are where a lot of my influences are from.

Nitrous Oxide "Dreamcatcher"
"‘Dreamcatcher’ was a track that I actually made about three years ago. It was lying about on my hard disc until November of last year, when Tony (McGuinness) came to my studio to check out material for my album, I showed him a lot of tracks that I prepared for my album and other stuff including some unfinished projects, some older tracks too. Then right at the end of the visit I decided to show him one more track that needed some work; ‘Dreamcatcher’. After the first listen, he was really excited and said it’s a really cool track with big potential. So I’m really happy I got the opportunity to show this tune to Tony here in Poznan, otherwise this track wouldn’t ever be released like dozens of unfinished tracks I have on the disk in my studio." - Nitrous Oxide

Maor Levi feat. Ashley Tomberlin "Chasing Love"
“’Chasing Love’ was my first track back after my period of national service with the Israeli army. After three years without Maor music, I finally had a chance to go back in to the studio and produce my fourth single with Ashley Tomberlin. Me and Ashley have known each other for a long time. She’s very supportive of my work, and we’ve been helping each other with music for a long time, so we always knew that there would come a point when we worked together properly – ‘Chasing Love’ was that track. Her voice is so unique and her style really stand out compared to a lot of other vocalists in the industry.”

"“‘The Wonder’ was a track that I created specifically for Anjunabeats Volume 8. I really wanted to create something massive and beautiful that had a strong melody and a nice groove. Offering you a deeper insight into Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats Volume 8, our ‘Behind The Music’ series will be taking you closer to the music as we ask our artists to open a window into their sounds. This week we speak to Andrew Bayer, Bart Claessen from Who.is and 7 Skies.

Andrew Bayer "The Taxi Driver"
“'The Taxi Driver' was a track I wrote on a plane flying back from Boston to Washington DC. I wanted to try and make a big-room progressive house track with just a few elements that are constantly building. The name 'The Taxi Driver' is another homage to one of my favorite films – 'The Fifth Element'. After coming up with the title, I cut up a female vocal sample, and placed it on the track as a finishing touch. Funnily enough, I thought it almost sounded like she was saying 'taxi driveerrrrr', so the name stuck!" - Andrew Bayer

Who.is "We.are"
“This track was totally inspired by the good old days of trance! The style has evolved into many new sounds. Some producers really want to stick to the ‘pure’ trance but somehow, in our opinion, they often don't manage to really grab that old warm feeling.
"Together me and Raz (Nitzan) analysed and tried to find the key ingredients that actually determined that sound, and used those for a new 2010 dish, with pure flavours and cooked according to old recipe… but with a new twist, of course
"The 'Who.is' artist name came to us after looking up a website in the www.who.is database. It sounded nice for an ‘unknown’ new project too!
‘We.are’ was the logical answer to track name, but it also refers to the feeling this track should create when played out to immense crowds. All in the same room, connected through the passion for music.”

7 Skies "Sushi"
“This is the only track I’ve ever made that has started from the groove and bassline, rather then the melody or a chord progression.
"All I had in mind was to produce something perfect for the clubs, energetic and driving. You know sometimes we have tracks with beautiful melodies which are great for when you drive a long way or when you relax on the couch, but when you play them in the clubs you stop the flow. With 'Sushi' I wanted to create something that maybe doesn't work so good on the couch, but that kills it on the dancefloor.
“I did several versions of this track, one was very Anjunadeep orientated but I didn't really like it, so I played a few chords over it and I made another version, but again I wasn't over the moon with it. Then all of a sudden I played those chords, loved them, wrote the melody afterwards and ‘Sushi’ was pretty much all there.” - 7 Skies

Following in the footsteps of the storming ‘Phoenix Burn’ that recently graced Anjunabeats Worldwide: 02 is ‘Seven Years’, the latest effort from Thomas Datt under his Asedo guise.

First in line is the Original Mix, a driving track punctuated with airy, windswept breaks. Regular Anjuna remixer Ronski Speed takes the first remix, adding an echoey vocal and accentuating the original’s atmospherics to great effect.

Lastly, we have a remix from US duo Deep Voices; fresh and melodic, its progressive edge shows the track in a deeper, ghostlier light.

Cream invited A&B to step in as a replacement for Deadmau5, who had to cancel the date due to exhaustion. Everyone at A&B HQ wishes Joel a speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing you all at Amnesia on the 12th.

Firmly established as Anjunabeats’ best selling artists behind Above & Beyond, the humble pair have been building up to this moment ever since joining forces in 2005. A diversion from the standard cheesy trance vocals so many favour, Jan Burton’s searching, distinctive tones feature on tracks like the bubbling groover ‘Slow To Learn’, the emotional rollercoaster of ‘Mercy’ and the edgy, subtle title track ‘Empire’. A former James Holden collaborator, Julie Thompson graces the blissful, gentle prog-trance of ‘My Enemy’, Alyna is on the swooning St. Etienne-styled electronic-pop of ‘Perfect Day’ and Betsie Larkin contributes a sassy vocal on the upbeat ‘Good Times’.

For fans of Super8 & Tab’s instrumental melodic trance there is still plenty to savour. The strafing Jean Michelle-Jarre-esque melodies of recent single ‘Black Is The New Yellow’ (with fellow Finn Anton Sonin) is Super8 & Tab at their sweeping, soaring best. On ‘Irufushi’ they blend the pacey groove of the Swedish house sound with the stadium sweeping euphoria of climatic trance, while ‘Bliss’ is an unashamed, energised homage to the rushing waves of the ’99 trance era.

The album closes, however, on the appropriately reflective ‘Free Love’ – a beautiful, bittersweet downbeat number with Jan Burton. The perfect finish, it rounds off arguably the most complete trance-influenced artist album since Above & Beyond’s own ‘Tri-State’ in 2006.

After a number of top-drawer productions with Signalrunners and two stunning collaborations with Boom Jinx it’s now time for Andrew Bayer’s first individual outing on Anjunadeep with ‘The Taxi Driver’.

Warm and gently insistent, the fresh melodies and searching female vocal samples are the hallmarks of the Original Mix, which breezes along dreamily with subtle unraveling complexities.

On Jaytech’s corking rework, the Anjunadeep maestro moves into housier territory thanks to some smooth synth lines and great use of the vocal – a classy summer groover.

“‘Let Go’ was inspired by the recent demise of a very tumultuous two year relationship. It was a time when I was finally coming to terms with how incompatible we were for each other and being willing to see the reality of that, accept it, and consequently walk away. As difficult as that process was, and as sad as a lot of the lyric is, there’s also a sense of serenity that runs through it; something that comes with surrender. So while the reference to ‘letting go’ was written specifically about the relationship, it also applies in a broader sense.
“It’s about giving up trying to control things, seeing them for what they really are, making peace with that and making choices from there. Musically I wanted something a little slower, less clubby and more intimate. Mark had expressed some interest in working together so I told him what I was looking for and he served it up just the way I had asked.” Aruna

“I was working on an idea that had been well received by Anjuna headquarters, but I wasn't sure what direction to take it in to finish it. I sent it to my beloved collaborator who came up with an absolutely massive hook for it. I had found an ethnic vocal phrase, manipulated it heavily and we felt the combination of the two was pure gold. Andrew had always wanted to call a track ‘Keyboard Cowboy’ and we both agreed it fit the track. With two of us being involved, ‘Keyboard Cowboy’, became ‘Keyboard Cowboys’.” Boom Jinx

Super8 & Tab feat. Anton Sonin ‘Black Is The New Yellow’
“Anton is working to next room of ours and, as he's alway playing loud, we could here him playing around with these sweet chords. He had troubles to find perfect melody over the chords and we had this dark groove we liked but didn’t know what to do with it. So we decided to put those two together and then added a little bit of Super8 & Tab melody magic on it. It worked out really well and it took us two days to finish this track.
“As for the name, well any of our track names have been quite short like ‘Elektra’ and ‘Suru’. This time we wanted to create a bigger naming that people can find meaning in – everyone can find their own explanation for it. For us, it is hearing in the colours. The start of the track is black and full on part is yellow, right?” Super8

Who.Is is the new project from trance legend Bart Claessen and fellow Dutchman Raz Nitzan – a prolific producer and former collaborator with 16 Bit Lolitas.

With a slight tech-edge to the intro, driving bass and an infectiously euphoric bleep melody, ‘We.Are’ quickly sets the pace before a breakdown that harks back to the glory days of classic trance. Epic and unravelling, it builds layers of melody, synths and pads into a climatic build, drops into a suckerpunch tight, techie groove before the final sweep of epic melodic release.

Another track that borrows from the past but gives classic sounds a fresh future, ‘909+’ is an unashamed homage to the Roland TR-909 drum machine – a piece of hardware instrumental in the birth of all modern dance music – and conjures waves of haunting, trippy trance bliss out of the vintage piece of kit. With echoes of classic Bonzai Records and LSG about it, ‘909+’ is an innovative arrangement that builds and builds into an epic hypnotic headtrip.
